Respect

One thing that has been striking to me since I've been here is the culture of respect. While out to a meal, we saw this displayed quite clearly.  Things such as serving the eldest at the table first has been ingrained in their way of life.  Individuals show respect to their elders and also to each other, and it contrasts quite starkly with the American way of life.  Too often we as Americans get wrapped up in what we are doing, and don't take the time to show respect.  We could learn a lot from the Japanese in this area.
